Doom 3 BFG Collection is the ultimate Doom package

DOOM 3 BFG Edition is the ultimate collection of groundbreaking games that defined the first person shooter. It includes DOOM, DOOM 2, DOOM 3, and DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil, as well as the 'Lost Mission.' All DOOM 3 content has been re-mastered for PlayStation 3 in stunning 3D for an even more terrifying FPS experience. With all this new Doom action, how can we make time for it all. Will you be picking up this collection?

Game info: The wait is over. After five years of development, Lead Programmer John Carmack and the id Software team have put together a revolutionary visual experience. Although Doom 3is not perfect, the 3D graphics engine upon which it is built sets a new, jaw-dropping standard that makes this game a must-have. In addition to adding multi-player action via xBox live, or via networked consoles, the Xbox version of Doom 3 also adds a great two-player cooperative mode.

Hell on Mars
Your character is a low ranking Marine on a routine rotation to the United Aerospace Corporation's (UAC) Mars Research Facility. That's pretty much all the back-story you need.Doom 3 is a bit skimpy in the story-line department, but rich plotting and character development have never been the focus of the Doom franchise. Action is the name of the game here, and we found plenty. After a few minutes of wandering through the facility, listening to rumors about impending catastrophe from the staff (remember Half-Life?) it was time to start shooting. We fought our way through dark, lavishly detailed environments until finally doing battle with pure evil in the depths of hell. Although the game offers no opportunities to explore the Martian setting apart from the linear corridors of the research facility, good level design and well crafted sound effects were successful at scaring the living heck out of us all the way through.
Creature Discomforts

Groaning zombies and the sudden leaping attack of an eleven-eyed Imp are just the beginning of the horror and anxiety in Doom 3. Floating Cacodemons attack from above with a mouthful of teeth, ethereal Revenant fire flesh-seeking missiles with deadly accuracy, a swarm of spider-like Trites skitter down the corridor, hungry for blood. Although the enemy AI in Doom 3 is less crafty than we would have liked, the incredible variety of enemies--each with a unique style of attack--outweighs this shortcoming somewhat.

Guns, Guns, Guns
While there are many powerful weapons in the game, they are designed to force players to anticipate and plan for firefights. For instance, we liked wielding the chaingun to shred enemies at longer ranges, but the weapon devours ammo and using it on close-range targets was a waste of bullets. We quickly learned to switch to the shotgun or the chainsaw to dispatch foes at close range.

One piece of hardware, the flashlight, was a point of both salvation and frustration for us. Doom 3 is a dark game and many enemies know how to take advantage of it. You'll find yourself switching back and forth between your weapons and your flashlight often just to see what's lurking ahead. This problem might be easily solved by duct taping the flashlight to your equipped weapon, but, alas, we found no duct tape on Mars.

Diablo 3 'Attack Speed' stat bugged

There are "a number of bugs" with the Attack Speed stat in Diablo 3 at the moment, Blizzard confirmed.

A fan posted an image on the forums of an item that he bought on the auction house.  The item was better in every way, yet somehow his overall damage was decreased by 2,400.

According to Diablo 3 community manager Mark Whipple (aka Bashiok), this is a known bug.

"The most common offender being that on some set/Legendary items it just doesn't work at all," he said. "It's a known issue and something we'll be fixing in a future patch."

It looks like the bug was a result of the recently released 1.0.2 patch which went live earlier this week.  You can check out the known bug list here.

Minecraft Snapshot 12w22a released

Today is Thursday which means more fun Minecraft goodies in the form of a weekly snapshot!

Today's snapshot for week 22 brings us a new Redstone-activating block, minor terrain changes, a lot of small changes, and a warning to all players who choose to download these previews of "possibly broken features".

Here is a quick overview of some of the changes introduced in today's Minecraft Snapshot 12w22a.

As always, if you discover anything neat hidden in the update, let us know in the comments below.

You can download the snapshot here:

In today's update, Minecraft lead developer Jens Bergensten also issued a warning to all PC players that these snapshots can potentially harm your saved games.  He also posted instructions on how to download and install the weekly updates.

Minecraft snapshots can 'destroy your save games'

In light of the gaining popularity of Minecraft's weekly snapshots, and the increasing number of angry emails received, Mojang has issued a warning to all PC players.

"The snapshots can potentially destroy your save games," lead developer Jens Bergensten warned.

Despite what some Minecraft players want to believe, the snapshots are not 100% guaranteed to work.  While Mojang tries to ensure a working snapshot, the point of them are to "give previews of possibly broken features."

"Expert users could satisfy their curiosity, and we received invaluable feedback on work in progress," Jens explained on how the weekly snapshot was born.

If you plan on downloading the weekly Minecraft snapshot, do so at your own risk.

"Only use them if you know what you are doing," Jens stated. "To “install” a snapshot, you download the JAR file and replace the one located in your “application data” folder. The easiest way to find that folder is to start the game, select “texture packs” and click on the “open texture pack folder” button. It will locate “.minecraft/texturepacks”, and the JAR file should be placed in “.minecraft/bin”."

"To UNINSTALL the snapshot, start the launcher (Minecraft.exe on Windows) and click the “options” button. Then click on “force update” and login as usual. The launcher will then download the official JAR file for you. Note that save games created in the snapshot may not work (and probably doesn’t) in the official version of the game."

If you prefer a safer alternative, you can wait until Mojang releases an official, well-tested update that fully contains all of the previously released content seen in the snapshots.

Meanwhile, if you enjoy the risk of seeing new features early you can see the list of changes introduced in today's Snapshot 12w22a here.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim 'Dawnguard' trailer released

Unable to wait until E3 next week, Bethesda has released the official trailer for Skyrim Dawnguard, the new expansion coming to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Dawnguard, the first game add-on for Skyrim, will be available first on Xbox 360 before heading to the PS3 and PC at a later date.  IT will be available for download for 1600 Microsoft Points on Xbox LIVE this Summer.  There was no mention of other platforms in the trailer.

The trailer shows of some new features like the crossbow, which was rumored to be an added feature.  Other previously uncovered files suggested Snow Elves, a Snow Prince, and new vampire feeding animations will be included in the Dawnguard add-on.  The Snow Prince could be the voice that is speaking, although it looks like Dawnguard will have some sort of demonic creature looking content.  That undead-looking horse looks amazing.

It appears as if the content surrounding Dawnguard will be focused around destroying some demonic, undead creatures - or perhaps choosing the darker route and joining this evil spirit to take on the Dawnguard and bring and end to the "tyranny of the Sun".

We should find out more at E3 next week when we meet with Bethesda so we'll be sure to keep you updated!

BioShock Infinite's combat has evolved 'substantially'

Combat in BioShock Infinite has evolved in a "very substantial way", according ot Irrational Games boss Ken Levine.

In an interview with CVG, Levine explained how game's large, vertical spaces have provided an opportunity for Irrational to include a variety of weapons that are effective in certain situations.  This is particularly useful when confronted with the BioShock Infinite's Heavy Hitters, a series of "mini bosses" new to the franchise.

"Combat is one of the things that has evolved in a very substantial way," Levine began. "The reason I feel that way is that in BioShock the combat got a little bit same along the way because of what we demanded of the player. You'd generally come across an enemy and the right way to deal with them - almost all the enemies - was to use the Electro Bolt, which was incredibly effective across the spectrum."

"With BioShock Infinite, one of the opportunities of having the large, vertical spaces is the ability to include weapons that are effective at short range versus those that are effective at long range," he explained. "You have certain weapons that are extremely effective against you on the Skyline and weapons that are more effective against you on the ground and vice versa in terms of how you interact with the enemies and which weapons you use, so you have to be thinking all of the time. 'What should I be doing now?' 'Which weapon should I be using?' 'Should I be on the Skyline?' 'Should I be on the ground?' 'Should I be in cover?'"

"And a lot of that also has an impact on the powers you get in the rest of the game. We're really putting a lot of effort into making more demands on the player in terms of combat choices. We're really making them think about the toolset, how they want to approach the combat, and how they want to build their character."

BioShock Infinite was recently delayed until February 26, 2013 in order for Irrational Games to "deliver the best Infinite possible."

Max Payne 3 pushed 'to its limits' on high-end PCs

With Max Payne 3 set to release on PC next week, Rockstar has detailed exactly what high-end PC owners can expect from the game.  While Rockstar worked hard to ensure that the game will run smoothly on a wide range of PC builds, lead PC designer Kevin Hoare, in an interview with PC World, promised a game that PC fans with higher-spec hardware can "sink their teeth in to".

"As you can see from the specs list, we’ve worked hard to make sure the game will run smoothly on a wide range of PC builds," Hoare said. "But it’s when you get towards the top end of that range that you can really push a game to its limits, and the game will look and run incredibly on the most advanced current machines around at the moment and well into the near future."

You’ll find that screen resolution is scalable, there’s triple and even sextuple monitor support which helps to run higher screen resolutions, there’s various anti-aliasing options, scalable water quality, scalable shadow quality, increased detail for characters and vehicles and a scalable texture filter that further increases visual quality," he continued.

Hoare added: "We’re also supporting DX11 with Max Payne 3, with features including Hull/Tessellation/Domain Shaders (which adds curvature to the character/vehicle models), Gather4 (for optimized shadow sampling / FXAA), Geometry shader / Stream Output and DX11 texture samplers to name a few."

"As you can tell, there’s a lot for PC fans with higher-spec hardware to sink their teeth in to," Hoare concluded.

Next Guild Wars 2 beta weekend set for June 8th

The Guild Wars 2Beta Weekend Event #2 will begin on Friday, June 8th and will run until Sunday, June 10th, ArenaNet announced today.

Servers will open at noon PDT (GMT -7) on Friday and close at 11:59 pm PDT (GMT -7) on Sunday.

Players who participated in the last weekend event will still have access to those characters and will be able to continue where you left off. Those who are level 35 or higher will be able to test their might against the Ascalonian Catacombs dungeon.

In addition to the new beta weekend announcement, Guild Wars 2 lead producer Chris Whiteside offered a massive "thank you" on behalf of ArenaNet towards everyone who has participated in the beta events.

"The participation and enthusiasm we’ve seen has exceeded our expectations, and we’re all very grateful and appreciative here at the studio," Whiteside said. "Your support during our first Beta Weekend Event and throughout development has been instrumental in getting us prepared for launch and helping us take massive steps in the evolution of Guild Wars 2 as a whole. You, our community, are an integral part of the development process, and Guild Wars 2 simply would not be what it is today without you."

"Your participation is even more important when you consider that we take our beta events very seriously in terms of our development strategy. At ArenaNet, “beta event” means exactly that—it’s a development-centric event in which we test our systems, discover new and exciting bugs, and get pivotal feedback from our testers about what is going in the right direction and what isn’t," he continued.

"We have listened intently to all of your feedback from our first Beta Weekend Event, and we’ve made great strides toward resolving many of the issues you’ve helped us identify. These include party movement into overflow servers, chat functionality, key bindings, server stability, performance, and many more that we will detail in the near future."

For those who haven't yet pre-purchased Guild Wars 2, you'll still have a chance to play in the beta via key giveaways.

Grand Theft Auto 5's Rockstar Games has 'no plans for E3'

Grand Theft Auto 5 developer Rockstar Games has "no plans for E3", according to sources speaking to CVG.

Although it's customary for Rockstar to skip E3, it's been speculated that the developer could make some sort of announcement regarding the highly anticipated GTA 5 before the E3 conference begins.

If these "trusted" sources are correct, then don't expect any information regarding GTA 5 or Agent to be revealed at any platform holders' E3 press conferences.

We haven't really heard much about Grand Theft Auto 5 since the game's unveiling in November, but we've already had a ton of speculation regarding potential gameplay and sales figures.

Analysts have estimated a release window between October 2011 and March 2013.

Mass Effect 3 patch 1.03 coming this week, change-log detailed

Mass Effect 3 is set to receive a huge list of fixes in the patch arriving this week on most platforms.  Mass Effect 3 patch 1.03 will be available for PC today, May 29, and for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on Thursday, May 31.

Today's update includes a new "Anti-AFK" feature that will remove AFK plaeyrs after a set amount of inactivity, and a ton of fixes for a multitude of issues.

If a bug hasn't been addressed in the 1.03 update it doesn't mean that a fix is not in the works for a future patch.  This week's update is not the final patch.

"Issues not fixed in 1.03 (story issues, PS3 framerate, EMS, etc) are being investigated for the next patch," BioWare's Chris Priestly assured players. "As with any bug, if it is not fixed, that is likely because it is not an easy fix. That doesn't mean that it won't ever be fixed, just that it was not ready by the time this patch was complete."

Far Cry 3 E3 2012 Teaser trailer

A week before E3 and we are already getting teased to death by upcoming game trailers and announcements. Ubisoft released a teaser trailer today for Far Cry 3 and it looks just as wild as the jungle that the game is taking place in. This trailer teases us with a different approach than the plot trailer from February, using broken segments as opposed to one fluid trailer. The full reveal for Far Cry 3 will be at the invite only Ubisoft E3 Press Conference in Las Angeles on June 4th, 3PM Pacific.

“This year’s E3 promises to be one of our biggest and best yet,” said Yves Guillemot, Founder and CEO of Ubisoft. “We’re showcasing the strongest, most competitive collection of core titles we’ve had in years, innovative new games for new platforms and a broad lineup that has something for everyone.”

Far Cry 3 will be shown alongside Assassin's Creed III, Rayman Lengends, Rocksmith and some Wii-U titles. Ubisoft has armed themselves with all the necessary products and reveals to combat any hype gathered by other games. They are definetly abourd the E3 teaser train and going full speed ahead.

League of Legends 'Draven, the Glorious Executioner' teased, abilities possibly leaked

Riot Games has given us a sneak peek at a new League of Legends champion, Draven, the Glorious Executioner.

Ready for this? He's Darius' brother.  As if one Darius wasn't enough, now we have to worry about his dual-wielding, blood-soaking fashion.

It pains me to say this because as much as I love Riot Games and League of Legends, I think they did release a broken champion in Darius and to see them readying the release of someone that looks so similar so quickly - without addressing the problems with Darius - pains me.

What's the ult going to be like on Draven?  He can target two champion and if he kills one of them it automatically refreshes?  Or how about all of his abilities refresh anytime he hits a character - that seems to be the direction Riot is going with these guys.  Another overpowered, brute, executioner.  Lovely.

League of Legends Draven and Darius

"While he might be the consummate entertainer, this vicious champion of the arena is most famous for knowing exactly how it is that the proverbial show comes to an end – usually in some grandiose, blood-soaked fashion," his description reads.

While Riot is likely to wait until E3 next week to officially unveil Draven's abilities, it seems one site got hold of his abilities early.  These haven't been confirmed.

Wicked Blades

Spinning Axe

Blood Rush

Stand Aside

Whirling Death

Oh look, refreshed cooldowns on two of his abilities! Like I said, these haven't been confirmed as Riot will probably hold off until E3. We will be sure to give you our initial impressions of Draven when we see him there.

Agent 47 goes Chris Brown on nuns in new Hitman: Absolution trailer

Square Enix has released the much-anticipated Hitman: Absolution E3 trailer and I don't think I'll ever trust nuns again.

While I originally thought yesterday's teaser image of several women dressed in sexy, tight leather outfits and stilettos could indicate some sort of multiplayer gameplay, it appears IO was just set on showing off some intense combat instead.

In the trailer a group of deadly specialized assassins dubbed "The Saints" head towards Agent 47's motel in an attempt to kill him on behalf of his former employer, the ICA.  Of course, that is easier said than done.  Watch as Agent 47 goes Chris Brown on this group of "nuns".  Unlike the rapper, however, Agent 47's beat down is completely necessary.

As Square Enix announced earlier, this new Hitman: Absolution trailer is just a little of what the company has to offer at E3 this year.  Square Enix has promised a "powerful and diverse" lineup of games this year which will include Quantum Conundrum, Sleeping Dogs, Kingdom Hearts 3D [Dream Drop Distance], and Tomb Raider, along with other promising looking titles.

We'll be sure to give you the run down of all of Square Enix's upcoming games, including Hitman: Absolution, from E3 next week.

Battlefield 3 Premium coming June 4, fact sheet leaks details early

Battlefield Premium, EA's new premium content service for Battlefield 3, will be rolled out on June 4th, according to an leaked fact sheet that details all of the service's features.

To service costs a one-time payment of $49.99 and includes a variety of features including all five expansion packs plus two weeks early access to the future ones and a "host of unique in-game items not available anywhere else" like dog tags, camos, and Platoon emblems.

While Battlefield Premium is an optional service, these next few features might provide a bit of an unfair advantage.  The service also includes, and this might anger some of you, a stats reset feature.  You'll be able to reset your Score/Minute, Kills/Deaths, and Wins/Losses.  Fair?

It gets worse.  Battlefield Premium also introduces server queue priority.  So remember that game you paid $60 for at launch to play online with friends?  Well, now you have to pay another $50 to ensure your spot on a server.  Otherwise enjoy waiting in line with the rest of us common folk.

Here's the full run down of content and features included in the Battlefield Premium service according to the fact sheet:

So much for fair play.  Battlefield Premium has now become a game where money can buy you advantages over others. It is expected to launch alongside the Close Quarters DLC on June 4 across Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.  Check out the full fact sheet below.

Rockstar North collaborating with Rockstar San Diego on Grand Theft Auto 5

Rockstar wasn't kidding when they said Grand Theft Auto 5 is their most "ambitious open world game" they've ever created.

After rumors that Mafia II developer 2K Czech was contributing to the development of Grand Theft Auto 5, it's now being reported that Rockstar San Diego is also collaborating with Rockstar North, the only confirmed developer to date, on the game.  Rockstar San Diego last worked on Red Dead Redemption.

This comes from the LinkedIn profile of ex-Rockstar senior artist Jonathan G. who stated that he "worked on Grand Theft Auto 5 at Rockstar San Diego" between March 2011 and March 2012.

If true, this wouldn't be the first time Rockstar North has collaborated on a project. Rockstar North previously worked with San Diego on Red Dead Redemption and with Team Bondi on L.A. Noire.

Despite earlier speculation, Rockstar Games has said they have "no plans" for Grand Theft Auto 5 at E3 next week, so don't expect to hear any details soon.

Diablo 3 login delays due to 'high traffic'

Many Diablo 3 players, particularly those on the European servers, are receiving "Error 37" and "Error 3006" when logging into the game.  It's just one of the few problems that have plagued Diablo 3 since it's launch earlier this month and a major problem players have with the always-online requirement of Blizzard's new game.

According to Blizzard community manager Takralus, "Error 37 indicates that the authentication service (the step that verifies your username and password, and checks to see that you've agreed to the Terms of Use) for Diablo III is experiencing a high volume of traffic and cannot immediately process your login attempt."

So this error is really nothing players are doing wrong, but rather an effect due to Blizzard's poor servers.

"We're working to reduce the frequency at which players are prompted with this error message and ensure that everyone can log in and play as quickly as possible," Takralus confirmed on the European forums.

In the meantime, players will have to continue to put up with login delays due to high traffic.  Sorry Athene, you may have to attempt to break all Diablo 3 Inferno boss records once Blizzard has solved the problem.

'Major' Sonic & All-stars Racing Transformed announcement coming at E3

SEGA will be making a "major announcement" at E3 next week for their upcoming title Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, the company announced today.

For those who haven't heard of the game, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is a new racing experience featuring Sonic the Hedgehog and the rest of the SEGA cast.  Players will race across land, air, and water in vehicles that fully transform from cars to plants to boats.

We don't have any idea what the announcement will be, but we are excited to find out next week at E3.  All we know right now is that there will be a "large reveal", so your guess is as good as ours.  Maybe they will announce it as a Wii U title as well?

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is currently set to launch in late 2012 on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo 3DS, and PC.

What do you think/want the announcement to be?

Blizzard 'investigating' Diablo 3 Auction House latency

Outside of actual server issues affecting Diablo 3 logins, Blizzard has also had their hands full with the auction house - a new, but controversial feature implemented in Diablo 3.

When first announced, fans were up in arms over the auction house, which allows users to buy and sell items they find for either in-game gold or real life cash.  As of right now only the in-game gold service works right now with the real-money auction house delayed indefinitely.  Blizzard may want to fix the current issues plaguing the auction house before implementing the real-money version, however.

Currently, the auction house is plagued with latency affecting search results, active auction listings, posting auctions, and successful sales and purchases. In short, it's not a very pleasant experience to buy and sell in Diablo 3 right now.

According to a post today on the European forums, Blizzard is "continuing to investigate" the latency issues on the Diablo 3 auction house.

Blizzard "hopes to have all transactions running smoothly as soon as possible."

"Please note that while these issues may cause a temporary delay in having purchased items appear in your Completed tab, your items have not been lost," Blizzard community manager Takralus reassured players. "If you do not see your purchased items immediately, please wait and try again later."

"This also applies if you are experiencing difficulty transferring gold from your Completed tab to your character’s stash. Though your sales and purchases may not appear in your auction log, those transactions have still been recorded and should process within 24 hours," Takralus added.

The auction house woes are just the beginning of the problems Blizzard has been dealing with since Diablo 3 launched earlier this month.  Since its release the servers, particularly the European ones, have been suffering due to high amounts of login traffic resulting in Error messages 37 and 3006.  In the same post, Takralus informed fans that Blizzard is "working to reduce the frequency" at which these error messages appear.

Report: Apple not interested in console production

Apple Logo

Last month we covered a rumor that was reporting that Apple was producing a gaming console to be released in late 2012, most likely integrated with Apple TV. According to Apple's CEO, though, they're up to "non-traditional" gaming projects - simply put, they have no plans to jump into the console business.

Apple CEO Tim Cook, speaking to reporters at the D10 conference, Cook dismissed the rumors stating, "I'm not interested in being in the console business in what is thought of as traditional gaming. But Apple is a big player today, and things in the future will only make that bigger."

If you are looking forward to Apple's next "big thing," you can now bet that it will not pertain to console gaming, at least in the production aspect. Though we weren't quite sure what to think when the rumors began to surface last month, we're a bit disappointed that we won't see Apple and Valve's - who was rumored to be partnered with the corporate giant on the project - take on the "console war" (if we still want to act like that's a thing).
