Ubisoft forgoes always-on DRM for PC games

Assassin's Creed 3

Due to complaints, Ubisoft has ditched the always-on digital rights management for its PC games.

Players criticized the anti-piracy effort, which required them to be online for their games to work.

According to an interview with Rock Paper Shotgun, Ubisoft did away with the measure months ago — back in June, said the company's worldwide director of online games, Stephanie Perlotti — but hasn't made it official until now.

"We have listened to feedback," said Perlotti, "and since June last year our policy for all of PC games is that we only require a one-time online activation when you first install the game, and from then you are free to play the game offline."

Ubisoft's previous stance meant that if an internet connection dropped, players would be kicked out of the game, losing any unsaved progress they made.

Players can also activate games on as many machines as they want.

In July of last year, Ubisoft told PC Gamer that the DRM had caused "a clear reduction in piracy."

NHL 13 soundtrack revealed, looks to create authentic hockey experience

NHL 13 Image

EA has announced the official NHL 13 soundtrack, which they hope will help create an "authentic in-arena hockey experience". The soundtrack features 16 licensed tracks by established and upcoming artists from around the world including Anti-Flag and Foxy Shazam.

Couple with the extensive presentation overhaul in NHL 13, the music will ensure the game sounds like an authentic NHL hockey experience.

“The true NHL hockey experience is about speed, power and creativity,” said EA's Worldwide Executive of Music and Marketing, Steve Schnur. “To create its sonic counterpart, our soundtrack features a mix of well-known bands like Gaslight Anthem, Anti-Flag and The Offspring, up-and-comers that include Battleme and Canada’s Classified and Monster Truck, and arena favorites like Zombie Nation’s ‘Kernkraft 400’ and Bassnectar’s ‘Pennywise Tribute’. We think fans will agree that this is the new sound of NHL hockey.”

Below is the complete NHL 13 soundtrack:

In addition to the soundtrack, NHL 13's gameplay will help create an authentic experience led by the all-new True Performance Skating, and supported by an innovative new AI system dubbed "EA Sports Hockey I.Q."

NHL 13 will be available on September 11, 2012 in North America and September 14, 2012 in Europe.

Dementium 2 bringing the scares to PC and Mac

Dementium 2 Image

Two years ago, Dementium 2 offered up a survival horror experience for DS owners. The game was ambitious, attempting to bring some major scares and compelling first-person shooter gameplay to Nintendo's previous handheld. Ultimately, developer Renegade Kid delivered the goods for the most part. While Dementium 2 wasn't without its flaws, it was a solid title for DS gamers looking for something different from most of what's on the portable.

Now it looks like the game will reach a wider audience. As announced today, Dementium 2 is now headed to PC and Mac. The game is set to launch for the platform "soon" and is being developed using the Unity engine. If you want a slight glimpse of the improved visuals, check out the teaser below. But seriously, don't expect anything more than a slight glimpse.

Aside from the amped up graphics, Dementium 2 on PC and Mac will also support the Xbox 360 controller, as well as mouse-and-keyboard configuration. So far, that's all we really know about this upcoming survival horror shooter.

Memetic Games and Digital Tribes Games are currently working together on this new version of Dementium 2. Expect some more announcements down the road, and if you never played the original DS game, watch out for this upcoming iteration.

To the Moon takes off on Steam this Friday, follow-up planned

To the Moon Image

Developer Freebird Games has announced that it will be releasing To the Moon on Steam on September 7. That's this Friday, you guys! News of the game's Steam launch comes straight from the indie dev, who had previously revealed plans to do so.

If you already purchased To the Moon directly from Freebird, you'll have access to a free Steam key. You'll have to email the studio and request it, though, so stay tuned for a future announcement regarding how that will all be handled.

In addition to the Steam news, Freebird has announced that it will be working on a new episode of To the Moon. The upcoming title will star the same doctors as they try to implant artificial memories of fulfilled dreams inside another character's brain.

To the Moon was well-received when it launched last year. Specifically, it was lauded for its ability to tell a compelling tale within the confines of its video game-ness. Additionally, we awarded the game a spot on GameZone's top 10 indie games of 2011 list.

Team Solo Mid are your North American League of Legends Champions!

League of Legends Image

PAX sure was an intense weekend for eSports - you had the DOTA2 International Finals, the Red Bull LAN and the League of Legends regionals all on the same weekend. It was hard to know what to watch - but the most exciting of these tournaments had to be the League of Legends tourney which had some extremely tense moments and dramatic finishes.

Day four of the tournament kicked off with a grudge match between Counter Logic Gaming and Curse Gaming. The players of Curse were mostly old CLG players, so the tactics were familiar between the two teams. Indeed, the energy was high in the match as these Curse players were out to prove that CLG made a mistake in letting them go. The stakes couldn't have been higher either - the winner of the match not only secured themselves a 3rd place finish, qualifying them for the World Championships, they also would secure themselves a guaranteed salary in the Season 3 Championship Series from Riot.

CLG's unorthodox double teleport strategy allowed for greater map control in game one, throwing Curse against the ropes. Curse knew they had to give it their all, and you could sense their despiration in some of their pushes. However, CLG's superior farming won out and they managed to secure a win after a grueling 45 minute game.

With third place decided, it all came down to the finals between fan favorites Team Solo Mid and Dignitas - despite Dignitas' best efforts, TSM came to win today. With superior coordination in game one, TSM was able to escape team fights with literally slivers of health left, dominating top and mid lanes. This domination led to the tournaments earliest Baron kill at 22 minutes in. Dignitas thought to counter that in game two with their tournament life on the line, switching back to an earlier poke style team composition that had served them well in the semifinals. However, TSM switched gears and went completely on the offensive, steamrolling Dignitas and winning the entire tournament!

Final Results and Winnings

1) Team Solo Mid: $40,000. World Championship Seeded past Group stages. Season 3 Qualified for Salary

2) Dignitas: $30,000, Season 3 Qualified

3) Counter Logic Gaming Prime $25,000, Season 3 Qualified

4) Curse $15,000

5) Team Legion $10,000

6)Team Dynamic $10,000

7) Monomaniac Ferus $10,000

8) TSM Evo $10,000

Congrats to all the participants, and a big thank you to RIot for putting on a wonderful tournament!

Stained demo updated, pre-orders now available on Impulse

Stained Image

Developer RealAxis Software has released an updated demo for Stained. This latest version adds a few enhancements and removes some in-game bugs. Additionally, it makes the combat sequences a bit more challenging (read: a lot more challenging).

In my preview of Stained, I discussed how the game was tough but fair. Like so many old school action platformers before it, the game really makes you think before you act, and you need to time your offense properly if you want to succeed. This amped up difficulty should prove interesting for gamers looking for a high level of challenge.

Stained is set to launch later this month. You can currently pre-purchase the game on Impulse for $8.99, and it's also headed to Desura. Additionally, RealAxis has submitted the upcoming puzzle platformer to Steam Greenlight for approval.

The Network blasts its way to Playism

The_network

The Network is the latest indie title to make its way to Playism. The game, which appears to be a retro-inspired top-down shoot 'em up has a unique feature: You never actually fire bullets. Instead, you must collect nodes and direct them toward enemies.

The Network looks to provide gamers with a fresh take on the traditional shmup. It's pretty interesting stuff, and I look forward to playing the game for myself.

You can download The Network for $1.99 on Playism. The game includes over 20 levels, three modes, and an "unforgettable ending." You can expect a review right here on GameZone soon.

Bethesda explains the concept behind Skyrim 'Hearthfire' add-on

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Image

When Skyrim's Hearthfire add-on was announced earlier this week, I teased that it would turn your Elder Scrolls V game into The Sims. The new add-on, which will release for a modest 400 Microsoft Points ($5.00), adds the option for players to build a custom house and start a family. It's a huge feature, but not something I ever would've imagined would be released. So what was the concept behind it?

Bethesda has released a new Skyrim team diary detailing the creative process of developing Hearthfire and how the idea came to fruition. Similar to Dawnguard, Hearthfire was first showcased in Bethesda Game Studios' first-ever "Game Jam", a week-long exercise where members of the team shared in-game ideas for expanding Skyrim.

As explained in the post, lead designer Bruce Nesmith approached environmental artist Robert Wisnewski to help create something "different" form what he traditionally does as a designer. Wisnewski was "inspired to expand upon the game's housing options in large part because of his enthusiasm for Skyrim's crafting systems".

"It started as a small idea to expand on the crafting element of the game because alchemy, smithing and enchanting were things I was interested in when we were playtesting the game," Wisnewski explained. Although the feature showed off at Game Jame was relatively simple — a small cabin that included a forge for players to create objects that would then become a part of the house — the team loved the idea.

Co-lead designer Kurt Kuhlmann began working on it after the Game Jam on his own time and both he and Wisnewski continue to add to it.

"We even were able to add a wine cellar!" Wisnewski said. "Anything you can think of that you'd want to have in a Skyrim house is here."

That includes the option to have kids. That's right, in Hearthfire, you can expand upon your family and adopt children which you must help raise.

"The idea of adoption came to me after the Dark Brotherhood questline was presented," Level designer Steve Cornett recalled. "After first seeing the [Innocence Lost] questline, I asked, ‘what happens to the kids? What happens to the orphanage after the quest is completed?'"

"Steve did a great job designing the adoption [system] and making kids in the game really come to life," Nesmith added. "Simple things like having them ask for money or playing a game with them. While these things don't necessarily have implications to my character's adventure, they do make the children feel so much more alive."

"The actual scope of Hearthfire blows me away. It's one thing to say you're going to add these things, and it's another to see a small team build something that's so complex and rigorous and have all those pieces, " concluded Nesmith.

Hearthfire is set to release on Xbox 360 on September 4. No PC or PS3 dates have been announced. PS3 users are still awaiting Dawnguard, which has been available on Xbox 360 and PC for quite a while now, but it looks like it may never make it to Sony's console. Yesterday, Bethesda admitted their struggles with bringing Dawnguard to PS3 is "not a problem we're positive we can solve", but assured fans they are working hard with Sony to bring the content to PS3.

Aliens: Colonial Marines' new 'Escape Mode' is eerily similar to Left 4 Dead

Aliens: Colonial Marines Image

Aliens: Colonial Marines has added a new multiplayer mode to go along with the already-announced competitive deathmatch.

The new "Escape" mode puts the four-person Colonial Marines team on the offensive against a four-player Xenomorph team. In this mode, the Marines must make their way through the map in order to escape the attacking Xenomorphs who are tasked with eliminating them as quickly as possible — sound familiar?

Regardless of its similarities to Left 4 Dead, it still sounds like a fun mode. Of course, while offering a robust multiplayer component, we all know the heart of Aliens: Colonial Marines lies within the single player story — one that looks to deliver that same bone-chilling suspense and adrenaline-filled action from the movies on to the consoles.

Aliens: Colonial Marines is set to release worldwide on February 12, 2013 for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. A Wii U version is expected launch as well, but for now the release date will be revealed at a later time.

MapleStory publisher Nexon America replaces its CEO

MapleStory

Nexon America's chief executive officer Daniel Kim is stepping down after three years with the company, founded in 2005. He will return to Seoul to take on new duties.

Min Kim, currently the senior vice president of live games, will begin his new position as CEO, replacing Daniel Kim effective September 1.

Nexon is the dominant producer of free-to-play online games in South Korea. It was founded in 1994 and has 11 subsidiaries. The American offices helped launch MapleStory in the US.

According to Min Kim, who spoke to Polygon, the decision to change CEOs was Daniel Kim's own: "After more than three years of commuting from Seoul, where his wife and children live, Daniel was ready to relocate back to his home.

"This August marks my ninth year at Nexon," said Min Kim, "and I'm excited to author some of my own chapters to the company's history. I'm committed to our players, our employees, and our shareholders, and I will do my best to deliver for all three."

David Bateson returns to voice Agent 47 in Hitman: Absolution

Hitman: Absolution Image

Square Enix announced today that David Bateson will return to reprise his role of Agent 47 in Hitman: Absolution.

Bateson, who has been the voice of Hitman since the year 2000 with the PC release of Codename 47, was selected after a long search by developer IO Interactive.

“IO and Bateson have been bed fellows for over a decade and like all long running relationships sometimes absence makes the heart grow fonder," brand director Jon Brooke said about the decision to bring Bateson back after the studio earlier said he would be the voice of Agent 47 in Hitman: Absolution. "Looking back I think we were just playing hard to get.”

William Mapother, of hit TV series LOST, has performed the motion capture work for Agent 47. Both Bateson and Mapother now join a long list of talented cast members which includes Marsha Thomason, Keith Carradine, Vivica Fox, Shannyn Sossamon and Powers Boothe.

Hitman: Absolution is set to release globally on November 20, 2012 for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

Here's your first Guild Wars 2 level 80 character; ArenaNet responds to 'unusual' leveling

Guild Wars 2 Image

If you were hoping to become the first level 80 character in Guild Wars 2, I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but you're too late. It appears as if the game, which just entered it's early access period on Saturday, already has its first max level character.

As reported by MMO Culture, the first level 80 Guild Wars 2 character is, surprisingly, a crafter who goes by the name Surfeuze. According to the site, he attained the max level with help from his French guild War Legend, who fed him with materials to help him level through crafting, although it has since been revealed that he did play the game normally "at times".

Despite rushing to level 80, it won't make the game turn to "easy mode" for him due to the fact that his stats and level will be scaled according to the map he is in. He also still needs to earn reputation points to purchase items and attain achievements.

Nonetheless, it is still quite an accomplishment for Surfeuze and if this shows anything, it's that teamwork pays off in the end. Or maybe you should just think outside of the box.

Responding to the player's fast leveling, ArenaNet's Mike O'Brien wrote, "Level 80 is always something to celebrate, but be aware that this was not through normal leveling. A few users have made us aware of unusual ways to level very fast. We're fixing these issues as I type."

They better fix it soon. Guild Wars 2 officially releases tomorrow, August 28.

Curse and Dignitas disqualified from MLG Raleigh for Collusion

League of Legends Image

After an intense weekend of competition, fans around the world and in Raleigh, NC crowded around the League of Legends finals expecting to see a professionally played game full of those moments of tension and excitement that only finals can bring. What they got instead was Curse and Dignitas conducted an All Random All Mid game, in which everyone picks random characters and goes to slug it out in the middle lane. Which was... odd to say the least. Though humorous to watch the commentators try to make sense of what was happening, this was an extremely unprofessional start to the finals.

This, of course, led MLG to start questioning people as to what was going on. It turns out that it was a widely known fact that Curse and Dignitas had collaborated before hand and decided that no matter who won (which explains why they even bothered with the ARAM), they would just split the prize money since it did not change their position on Riot's Season 2 Championship Leaderboard. So, as a result of this, MLG and Riot have agreed that no 1st or 2nd place prizes will be awarded, and the same with the Circuit points for Riot's system. Rather, the $40,000 for first place will be split between the 3rd-6th place teams.

Personally, I think that was in extremely bad taste for the teams to even consider doing and gives eSports (especially League of Legends eSports) a bad name. Especially with all the effort Riot is putting in to make their game a legitimate way to make a living, this is just a slap in the face. For shame Curse and Dignitas. For shame.

This echoes earlier scandals that have happened in the eSports world when StarCraft: Brood War matches were fixed in Korea, and started that game's slow decent into inner league turmoil that plagued its existance for the last two years before StarCraft II was released.

Both teams have issued apologies for the All Random All Mid in game one of the finals, however, both parties involved are awfully quiet about the collusion (aka Match Fixing)  issue. Hopefully both teams are adequately embarrassed of their own behavior, and will think twice next time before conductiing themselves in such a manor. I applaud MLG and Riot for making a decision like this on the spot and not deliberating for too long, despite needing to conduct a thorough investigation.

The Raven is King ART's next adventure game

The Raven Image

Developer King ART successfully delivered a legitimately entertaining and pleasantly comical adventure gaming experience with The Book of Unwritten Tales. The game, which had been available in Europe for some time, recently launched in North America, and it was met with wide critical acclaim. Now, King ART is working on its next project, which was announced at this year's Gamescom.

The Raven takes place in 1960s Europe and follows the tale of the titular bandit. You'll have to keep a close eye for The Raven's signature black feather clues and seize him and the stolen Eye of the Spinx.

Check out the trailer below for a glimpse of The Raven. Unlike The Book of Unwritten Tales, it doesn't seem like this will be a lighthearted tale rife with hilarious characters. Instead, The Raven takes a more serious approach at its storytelling, and it'll be interesting seeing King ART deliver something fairly different from its latest success.

Watch out for The Raven sometime in 2013. The game is scheduled to land on PC, Mac, and consoles.

Complete Madden NFL 13 player ratings revealed

MADDEN NFL 13 Image

EA concluded their four week long process of revealing player overalls in Madden NFL 13 today with the release of not just defensive player ratings, but the entire roster in this year's Madden title.

While they've already revealed the top 10 defensive players, it's worth seeing at who ranks near the top of the list. Mario Williams, who was one of my biggest questions, ranks just short of the top 10, placing 11th in the rating list with 97 overall. Some other notable mentions in the 90-overall region includes NY Giants RE Jason Pierre-Paul (96 overall), Bears MLB Brian Urlacher (95 overall),  Broncos CB Champ Bailey (95 overall), and Ravens MLB Ray Lewis (94 overall). For the entire Defensive Player overall listing, download the PDF here.

Lastly, since today was the final day of player reveals, EA has also provided the complete ratings for all players in Madden NFL 13. You can see all the players and their complete ratings in every category here.

Is there anyone you feel EA shafted in the ratings or did EA did a good job with Madden NFL 13?

I Am Alive is coming to PC this fall

I Am Alive

I Am Alive, Ubisoft's survival horror game that previously released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, is arriving on PC on September 13.

The game hit XBLA in March and PSN one month later. It holds a score of 75 on Metacritic. Let's see how how the PC version will do.

In November of last year, creative director Stanislas Mettra expressed concerns about the game coming to the PC platform.

"We've heard loud and clear that PC gamers are bitching about there being no version for them," the developer told IncGamers. "But are these people just making noise just because there's no version or because it's a game they actually want to play? Would they buy it if we made it?"

Afterward, Mettra contacted IncGamers and said he was "misunderstood." His email is no longer available to read on the website, so make of it what you will.

The game is scheduled for PC now, so whether or not Mettra was quoted in earnest, there's now an audience for I Am Alive on PC.

New Dishonored video studies the stealth mechanic

Bethesda has released a new video for upcoming first-person action game Dishonored which takes a look at the game's intriguing stealth system.

Using an innovative flexible combat system that combines supernatural abilities with weapons and gadgets, stealth combat is just one of many options players can choose from to dispose of Corvo's enemies. While ruthless attacks upfront is an option, pursuing your targets under the cover of darkness is an equally effective and satisfying experience.

Today's video takes a look at the game's stealth system, highlighting the tools and powers at your disposal to eliminate enemies while remaining unseen. If you do choose the stealth route just be sure to remember these two major factors: sight and noise.

Dishonored will be available for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC in North America on October 9 and throughout Europe on October 12.

Today was the intended release date for the game, but a new trailer revealed the extension.

Curiosity is a project of Molyneux's studio, 22Cans. In July, he called it "a test about the psychology of monetization" — one that'll cost you $77,400 for one of the best tools in the game, the diamond chisel.

"This is not a money-making exercise," assures Molyneux.

The game is expected to release for PC, iOS, and Android.

Described as the "largest update yet", Argon Queen adds a ton of high-level content to the game including several new dungeons, the long-awaited PvP battlegrounds, new character abilities, and much more.

One of the major highlights in Argon Queen is the lair of the sinister argon queen, whom players will confront in Manaya's Core. Two additional dungeons will also be made available in the update — Sirkuja Gallery and Argon Corpus — as well as an expanded 20-person raid in the Nexus Traverse.

In addition to the new dungeons and raids, the Warrior and Lancer classes will receive new abilities. These will surely come in handy in the new PvP battlegrounds, which players will compete against each other across server in action-packed 15-vs-15 matches. Within these PvP matches are TERA's infamous BAMs (Big-Ass Monsters) which require players to decided when to engage in conflict. Special in-game loot will be up for grabs for the top PvPers and weekly rankings will allow you to track your guild's progress compared to others.

To go along with the update is a fresh batch of screenshots that give you a look at some of the BAMs you'll encounter in the Argon Queen update.

Indie game Jellyova is a tribute to Ecco the Dolphin

Ecco the Dolphin Image

Indie developer Sergey Obolonkov is currently working on finishing up Jellyova, his upcoming underwater action-adventure game. The indie title is said to feature Metroidvania gameplay elements, and it is a tribute to Ecco the Dolphin.

After checking out the trailer for Jellyova (below), the game reminded me a lot of Ikachan. For those of you who may be unaware, that was one of Cave Story developer Studio Pixel's earlier works, and it was absolutely incredible.

I'm digging the marine adventure vibe of Jellyova, and the colorful visuals certainly add a nice aesthetic flair to the game. Curently, the project is about 90 percent finished. Still no word on when Jellyova will launch or what platforms it will be available on, but we should be getting news on those details soon considering the game is pretty far along in its development.

Resident Evil 6 goes gold with a new trailer highlighting RE.net features

Resident Evil 6 has officially gone gold, but the big announcement coming out of today's Capcom press release had more to do with Resident Evil.net, the free online service that will "enhance the Resident Evil 6 experience".

The new service, which expands online play and enables access to exclusive in-game content, requires nothing more than a copy of Resident Evil 6 and internet connection.

So what does Resident Evil.net offer players who sign up? The new trailer today highlights the service's many features which can be found below:

As for Resident Evil 6 going gold, well that just means the the video game is 100% complete, or as complete as it needs to be to head into mass manufacturing for Xbox 360 and PS3. A PC release will "follow soon", according to Capcom.

The Rain Man joins Team 4Not for League of Legends MLG Summer Championship

therainman team 4not

The Rain Man is back baby! Former Team SoloMid (TSM) top player 'TheRainMan' left the team a while back, bleached his hair, bought a dog, moved to Orlando, and just solo queues and streams on his own. That was... until today. There's been rumors of whether The Rain Man would be joining a competitive team since he got replaced by Dyrus, but it wasn't until today that eSports site GGChronicle reported that The Rain Man will be playing for Team 4Not at the MLG Summer Championship.

The MLG Summer Championship takes place in Raleigh, North Carolina this weekend, August 24-26. Players and teams will compete in StarCraft II, Mortal Kombat, Soul Calibur V, and League of Legends. The Rain Man and former Dignitas player L0CUST join Team 4Not as they make a run for a seed in the North American Regional Finals. They stand a pretty good chance with the arrival of the two new players, as Team SoloMid and CLG Prime won't be present at the tournament.

The roster for Team 4Not at this weekend's event will be:

TakashiX - AP Carry

OneBadBrad - Jungle

The Rain Man - Top

paroL - AD Carry

L0CUST - Support

I'm expecting to see some Yorick played, as I've enjoyed watching him take the character mid. What do you think about the roster additions to 4Not and their chances of winning?

Edmund McMillen dishes out new details on The Basement Collection

Aether Image

Last month, Edmund McMillen announced that he would be releasing The Basement Collection, a compilation of some of his greatest early indie hits. The set will include Time Fcuk, Aether, Meat Boy, Spewer, Grey Matter, Triachnid, and Coil. To sweeten the deal even more, McMIllen revealed that he would also throw in a super secret unloackable game.

Now the developer has released even more info that's sure to make fans get stupidly giddy with excitement. I know I did. First, all of the games in The Basement Collection will feature achievements that are tracked within the compilation. Beating the games will unlock different rewards, as will achieving 100 percent on each title.

Regarding Time Fcuk (one of my favorite indie games of all time), a brand new chapter is going to be added to that game. This new collection of 33 levels will be high in challenge and feature its own story. I tell ya, I'm stupidly giddy as I write this.

Some other enhancements are being made, as well, such as a brand new soundtrack by Danny B for Aether and improved controls for both Triachnid and Meat Boy. Yay! McMillen also announced that The Basement Collection will feature over 10 minutes of unused footage from Indie Game: The Movie where he talks about Aether, Coil, Triachnid, and one of his secret games.

Watch out for The Basement Collection on Steam. It'll be priced at $4, which is, like, crazy awesome, you guys. Still no official release date yet, but we can expect that "shortly."

A Valley Without Wind getting graphical redesign

A Valley Without Wind Image

Despite the fact that I actually thought the graphics in A Valley Without Wind were pretty interesting, not a lot of people felt the same way. As a matter of fact, the majority of gamers weren't too fond of the game's art style. Even people who haven't played A Valley Without Wind seem to be turned off by the game's visuals, which is a shame because this is a pretty damn good game.

According to developer Arcen Games founder Chris Park, Heavy Cat will be doing a lot of the visual reworking for A Valley Without Wind, which means the rest of the studio can focus on other projects. There's still plenty of work to be put into the graphical overhaul, but gamers can expect A Valley Without Wind to get a fresh coat of paint this November.

While the art style isn't final, Park showed off a screen of how the visuals are currently looking, and I have to say, it's really nice. Sure, I liked the graphics in A Valley Without Wind the first time around, but admittedly, this new style is definitely a lot cleaner, and I can most certainly dig it.

Next Corpse Party game takes place in a hospital

News-corpseparty

Team GrisGris — now called Grindhouse — is preparing a new Corpse Party game for PC in Japan.

Corpse Party 2: Dead Patient is the direct follow-up to Corpse Party, which Xseed localized for PSP late last year. The sequel moves the setting from the series mainstay Heavenly Host Elementary to a hospital locale.

The game will release in Japan this winter.

Previously, we heard that Team GrisGris (as it was known then) was developing a comedic spin-off named Corpse Party: The Anthology. Publisher 5pb. seems to have released the game early this month.

The visual novel genre isn't too popular in the US, even with more successful titles like 999: 9 Hours, 9 Person, 9 Doors for the Nintendo DS. Did you play Corpse Party for PSP? Would you play another?

Capcom wants to make Remember Me 'a major franchise'

Remember Me

This week at Gamescom, Capcom introduced Remember Me, a new action-adventure game coming for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC from Dontnod Entertainment. Capcom senior producer Mat Hart said the publisher wants multiple games from Dontnod — a whole franchise, actually.

"We're looking to build a long-lasting relationship with them as a developer, and build this into a major franchise," Hart told Joystiq.

Capcom is looking at a May 2013 release window. "The thing is," said Hart, "if you leave it too late into next year, then you are starting to straddle that line where you're starting to move into the next-generation consoles. And what we want to do is make sure we launch this on the current generation of consoles, to really sell it in and establish it as a new IP. And then build the franchise out in line with the new consoles coming out."

Do you think Capcom is making a prudent decision releasing the game earlier rather than later?

Complete Receivers ratings revealed for Madden NFL 13

The third week of EA's Madden NFL 13 ratings reveal concludes this week with the unveiling of every receiver overall in the game.

In similar fashion to Monday's top 10 reveal, tight ends continue their push into the receiving spot light. Just outside of the top 10 is Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten and just a spot below him is San Diego Chargers' Antonio Gates.

The most surprising reveal to me is that star New York Giants receiver Victor Cruz is only the 17th best receiver. After his year last year, I can't help but feel he's been shafted in Madden NFL 13. Perhaps EA is waiting for further proof that last year wasn't a fluke?

Whatever the reason, the ratings are set and here's the initial overall for every receiver in Madden NFL 13. As for what fans thought, of receivers, DeSean Jackson will have the highest agility rating in Madden NFL 13. It was a close race between Wes Welker and Larry Fitzgerald, but it looks like Fitzgerald will have the highest route running rating. Devin Hester will be the fastest receiver and Detroit Lions star receiver/Madden NFL 13 cover athlete Calvin Johnson Jr. will have the highest spectacular catch rating. Did you see last year's catch against the Cowboys in triple coverage? He's definitely deserving of the rating.

Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two trailer showcases forgotten characters

I'm super excited for Epic Mickey 2. It's pretty much everything I could have wanted in the original and more. From finally being multiplatform, to adding the ability to play co-op, not to mention it's a musical!

In this latest trailer, we get a glimpse at some of the characters in the game, including Oswald and what makes playing as him a completely unique experience. Mickey is armed with the magic brush allowing to paint or use paint thinner, while Oswald has a remote control which allows him to power certain things in the world.

The development team wanted to stay true to the source material and include some iconic characters in the game. Ortensia the Cat will be making a much larger appearance in Epic Mickey 2, rather than just being a mentioned character.

The Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two video game returns Mickey Mouse and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit to Wasteland, an alternate world filled with more than 80 years of forgotten Disney characters and theme park attractions.  But for the first time, Mickey and Oswald will join forces as true partners - Mickey with the magical paint brush that allows him to wield paint and thinner, and Oswald with a powerful remote control that allows him to command electricity.   This new co-op play further enhances the idea that "PlayStyle Matters" - a unique approach to gameplay pioneered by Warren Spector where players tackle challenges the way they want to in order to explore a variety of possibilities and storylines, but always with consequences for their chosen actions.

Cognition trailer is mysterious, has style

I'm digging this resurgence of adventure games. Seriously, this classic genre can provide some incredibly memorable moments if enough care and hard work is put into developing the right games. It seems we've got another PC adventure game on the horizon, and it looks like it could be a winner.

Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller follows the titular character, an FBI agent based in Boston, as she searches for clues to the murder of her brother. But Erica isn't your average detective. She's got the ability to touch objects and sense their past. You know what that means: crazy mysterious stuff is going down!

Cognition will feature a myriad puzzles and multiple paths, and you'll have to make different decisions along your journey in order to get the answers Erica is desperately seeking. The game really looks like it could be another stellar hit in this adventure game revival of sorts.

Adding to the potentially awesome gameplay is a sick cel-shaded art style. Everything looks nice and polished, and if the game plays as good as it looks, there's no doubt that Cognition will be an adventure game to watch out for.

More info will be released at PAX Prime later this month, so stay tuned for that. And keep a lookout for Cognition this fall.

Assassin's Creed 3's Naval combat shown off in new Gamescom trailer

Since its reveal, Ubisoft has boasted about Assassin's Creed 3's new naval combat system. Today, they released a new trailer giving skeptics, who believe it to be nothing but a glorified version of the previously seen tower defense feature, a new look at how naval combat will play out when Assassin's Creed 3 releases later this year.

Powered by the AnvilNext game engine, naval warfare in Assassin's Creed 3 will expose players to tumultuous waters and powerful winds as they captain their own naval warship.

The naval combat isn't just about destroying enemy ships with cannon fire. As you'll see in the trailer, there will be plenty of times for Connor to display his hand-to-hand combat as he leads his crew against the enemy in the open-sea.

Sea combat is just one of the many new features in Assassin's Creed 3 to help immerse you in 18th century Colonial America, fighting for freedom and liberty against ruthless tyranny.

Assassin's Creed 3 is due out for Xbox 360 and PS3 on October 30, 2012. It will also be available for Wii U although no release date has been announced. Ubisoft, last week, finally announced that the PC version of the game will launch on November 20th.

Ed + Danielle is the official Meat Boy, Isaac, and Theory of Cute shop (Updated)

The Binding of Isaac Image

Edmund McMillen and his wife Danielle have opened up shop and are ready to sell their awesome indie wares. The shop seems to be designed specifically for folks who dig merchandise based on Edmund and Danielle's previous works. This includes plushies, posters, figures, and comic books.

The merch list is a bit on the low side as of this writing, but that's to expected considering Ed + Danielle (a lovely name for the online shop, by the way) just popped up. Currently, you can snag, well, all the stuff I just mentioned in the last paragraph. Didn't read it? What the heck? Okay, you can snag plushies, posters, figures, and comic books. Well, a comic book to be exact. Issue number two of that sweet Super Meat Boy comic book to be even more exact. Jeez, you sure like prying the details out of me!

Aside from the Super Meat Boy and Binding of Isaac stuff, you can also snag Theory of Cute merch. That's Danielle's original brand of plush toys and accessories.

I look forward to seeing the selection of items grow on Ed + Danielle. If you're a fan of all things McMillen or just dig awesome figures and plushies, keep an eye on the site, because there's bound to be some more sweet stuff down the road.

Update: It looks like Ed + Danielle isn't open for business just yet. As explained by Danielle on Twitter, "The store is not actually open yet and I just listed a few things to see how they look :)" She also explained that the shop was moving from its previous home on Etsy, where Edmund and Danielle managed to turn out roughly 4,600 combined sales. Here's to another 4,600+ once the new shop launches!

Madden NFL 13: Top 10 Receivers revealed

It's Monday which means it's time for EA to reveal the overalls of the top 10 receivers in Madden NFL 13. While I'm not upset or angered with any of the results, it may come as a surprise to many that two of the top 10 receivers are actually tight ends.

There was a time in the NFL when you heard the time "receiver" and automatically thought wide receiver. But with the changing landscape of the NFL and it becoming more of a passing league, tight ends are more involved in the passing game than ever before - and it's starting to show as the number two receiver in Madden NFL 13 is a tight end.

Below are the top 10 receivers in Madden NFL 13.

As much as I can't stand the guy, I'm a little surprised to see Victor Cruz outside of the top 10. While I recognize he's a young player, and that might play into the overall factor, he outperformed fellow Giants' wide receiver Hakeem Nicks last year. Cruz caught 82 passes for 1,536 yards and 9 touchdowns. How could you leave him off the list? Sure, he may have been a one-year wonder, but he at least deserves a spot in the top 10, with the chance to move down in future weekly updates.

Other than Cruz, I think EA did a fairly good job in the ratings. Johnson is, by far, the best receiver in the NFL. His catch over three Cowboys defenders still haunts me in my dreams. As cover athlete in this year's Madden NFL 13, it's only fair that he be rated the highest. That, and he caught over 1,600 yards worth of passes and 16 touchdowns.

Keeping up with fan participation in player ratings, this week we can vote on the following receiver attributes: Speed, Agility, Route Running, Spectacular Catch. Head over to the Madden NFL 13 Facebook Page this week to cast your vote.

On Friday, the overall for every receiver in Madden NFL 13 will be revealed. So far EA has announced the Quarterbacks and Running Backs. Next week, EA will reveal the top defensive players.

Remember to download the free demo of Madden NFL 13, available tomorrow.

Smudged Cat releasing Gateways on Steam this September

Gateways Image

Indie developer Smudged Cat Games launched Gateways for PC back in June. The game featured 2D puzzle platforming gameplay with Portal-like elements, and it successfully managed to deliver a delightful and challenging experience.

Smudged Cat stated that it had Xbox Live Indie Games and Steam versions of Gateways planned, though no release dates were announced at the time. That's no longer the case as far as the Steam version is concerned because the developer has officially announced via Twitter that Gateways will hit Steam on September 13.

You can still buy the game on Smudged Cat's official site for $10, and if you do, the dev has stated that players will get a free Steam key to download that version of the game once it launches. That's mighty generous of Smudged Cat! Mighty generous and mighty awesome!
