Call of Duty Online could come to western regions

Call of Duty Online, the free-to-play take on Activision's high-profile first-person shooter, could expand beyond China.

During the recent Activision earnings call Chief Executive Officer of Publishing Unit, Eric Hirshberg, addressed bringing the micro-transaction-based Call of Duty - available only in China - to Western audiences.

“I think we look at the Call of Duty Online game in China on its own merit as a great opportunity,” he responded. “That’s not to say that we won’t gain learnings about how it works in the micro-transaction-based format for the game. And there are a few other regions where that would be very relevant. So — but we certainly are not ready to announce any plans in that regard.”

Call of Duty Online has been in development for "approximately two years". The new game adds a variety of game modes and maps, and features an original story told through a series of Special Operations missions that will be based on the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare universe.
